HVAC Training And Certification

Schools that teach the mechanics of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are located in each of the fifty states and offer training and certification in six months to two years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, three accrediting agencies for HVAC educational standards are HVAC Excellence, the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and the Partnership for Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Accreditation (PHARA). Those who are interested in HVAC training and certification should apply to schools accredited by one of these agencies.

Students are trained in the theory, design, diagnosis, and maintenance of HVAC systems, and learn to work with motors, pumps, switches and thermostats, as well as ducts, pipes, and fans. Courses in shop math, mechanical drawing, applied physics and chemistry, electronics, blueprint reading, and computer applications help increase competency. After certification in HVAC, apprentices generally need another six months to two years to become proficient. So what does the future hold for an HVAC technician with training and certification?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the job outlook for certified HVAC techs is excellent and that job growth should exceed the average through 2014. In 2004, the median wage for HVAC technicians was $17.43 per hour and rising.
