It's Not Your Father's Smelly Diesel
Last June, under U.S. Government EPA regulations, refineries were required to produce clean ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel for use on American highways. To top it off, particulate traps, capable of emission reductions of 90% and more, will be required on new diesel-burning vehicles in the country. The response by foreign automakers has been positive: new Honda, Toyota, and Mercedes Benz diesel-powered fleets are on the way.
The sulfur content is down, and there's nothing smelly about diesel exhaust any more. And from the designs at auto shows, the new standard and luxury upcoming cleaner diesel models coming to run on the fuel are nothing to sneeze at, either. Honda is working on a new emissions system called a plasma reactor that is said to increase diesel performance while making its models among the first to meet tough emission rules in California and many Northeast states. Honda hopes to have its models competing by 2009.
Mercedes-Benz recently showed off its BLUETEC diesel line, including the new E320 Bluetec sedan that accelerates 0 to 60mph in just over 6 seconds. Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler are also early players, working to adapt their current diesel engines to treat exhaust smells with an ammonia rinse.
In Europe, where more than 40 percent of all passenger car engines are powered by diesel, Toyota is trying out improvements on its direct-inject diesel engines for adaptation to the American sports and luxury car market. Models may also include a Land Cruiser, Previa, and Corolla.
