Finding Reliable Hybrid Vehicle Repair
You'd never guess where you'd find hybrid vehicle mechanics these days. You're probably thinking: right where I bought the car, right? Not necessarily. For instance, dealerships selling the new Ford Escape Hybrid send one member from their staff of ASE-certified technicians to a two-day training seminar. Don't laugh, that's an industry standard.
Automotive Career Development Center hybrid technician Craig Van Batenburg says you'll want more than an internal combustion wrench jockey with a hybrid parts catalogue to fix up a malfunctioning hybrid. Even so, the best of the breed of hybrid techs are still in diapers (metaphorically speaking). They, too, need up-to-date manufacturer specs and repair methodology along with the little experience that they've had in the few years the hybrids have been on American highways.
As hybrids make cares far more electrical and less mechanical, repair technicians will need to know more than how to locate the hood latch and pull a few plug wires. Since the braking system is also the recharging system on your hybrid, your mechanic will need to know the science and engineering behind the technology that runs your silent warrior.
Ask your prospective repair mechanic how much they know about the computer control system of your hybrid with its dual powertrains, as well as the methodology behind low-resistance tires, the ultracapacitors that return energy to the powertrain, and about hybrid batteries. (Did you know a replacement job for a hybrid battery can cost you $5,300 for imports and a nasty $7,200 For the Ford Escape?)
